The heat pads work when oxygen is supplied. So as soon as you open the package, the oxidation process begins, which generates the heat. By lightly kneading the heat pad when the package is open, you can speed up the oxygen supply a bit and bring about the heat process sooner. Under oxygen exclusion, the heat generation process stops.
Great for those cold days out in the countryside when you just want to take that chilly edge off.
